2. Grammar-Based Lesson Plan

Context: This lesson was prepared for students enrolled in a Spanish II course, the second class in the Spanish for Heritage Learners series at the University of New Mexico. The class meets for 50 minutes, three days per week. Enrollment in this course series presupposes some linguistic or cultural connection to Spanish, and is intended for students who might already have some sort of baseline abilities in the language. The purpose of this lesson is to introduce the students to the past tenses (preterit and imperfect) in Spanish, using an inductive presentation strategy. There will be three activities during the course of this lesson, covering all three modes of communication and the four language skills: A warm-up activity with a discussion relating to past material learned, namely vocabulary related to travel and planning (Interpersonal – Speaking; Interpretive – Listening); A reading activity related to travelers’ love stories, which will include the students writing out the meaning of different verbs in the story, and will involve a class discussion of the different types of verbs and the roles they play in the story (Main Activity; Interpretive – Reading; Presentational – Writing; Interpersonal – Speaking & Listening); The lesson will conclude with a cool-down activity, where students will have the opportunity to talk in small groups about past trips they have taken, using some of the past tense forms they learned in the main activity (Interpersonal – Listening & Speaking).

Chapter/Sequence: Due to the nature of this sort of Heritage Language program, there is not one consistent resource or textbook used in class, and activities/materials are taken from a number of different resources, or created by the instructor. Any use of outside materials will be cited in the course of this Plan. All transcripts (located in the Appendix) will be available for use if a student demonstrates the need.

Description of lesson:

Warm-Up Activity (10 minutes):

Primary Mode of Communication: Interpersonal

Primary Language Skill: Speaking

The warm-up activity will be split into two sections: For the first part (~5 minutes), the entire class will review some of the key vocabulary items from a previous lesson (cf. Vocabulary-Based Lesson Plan). The students will be asked to remember as many words related to travel as they can, the meanings of the words, and how to use them in discourse. For the second part of the warm-up (~5 minutes), students will be split into small groups of 2-3, and given time to discuss hypothetical plans for a future trip, which was covered in the previous Vocabulary-Based Lesson Plan. This reinforces how to talk about travel plans, a very useful and common communicative task.

Main Activity (25 minutes):

For the main activity, the instructor will provide handouts with six different stories taken from an online blog (Kára y David 2017; Transcripts available in the Appendix), from which students will pick three to read. Each of the stories relates to the topics of love and travel, and include many uses of both the preterit and imperfect tenses (each story contains at least ten past tense verbs in total). The students will be given ~15 minutes to read their three stories on their own, and will be asked to underline all of the verbs, giving special attention to: (1) The contextual meaning of the verb in the sentence/story, (2) which verbs describe completed actions (preterit), and (3) which verbs describe the background or setting of the story (imperfect). When finished, the class will come back together, and create a list of some of the verbs they identified, sorting them into either “Completed Actions” or “Background/Setting” categories. Once a significant amount of verbs have been identified and categorized, the instructor will give a short grammatical explanation, giving each of the categories their proper names of “preterit tense” and “imperfect tense,” with the floor being opened to the students to ask clarifying questions regarding the use of each tense, if the context of the stories and the activity itself haven’t already made this clear.

Follow-up Activity (15 minutes):

For the final activity, students will rejoin their small groups from the warm-up. Using some of the forms they learned in the main activity, they will discuss trips that they have taken in the past, and will be instructed to both set the scene using the imperfect tense, and discuss things they did using the preterit tense. After ~10 minutes, the floor will be opened to the students, to share what they discussed, or to ask further clarifying questions, if necessary.

“Camu y Marian de Trayectorias en Viaje”

Nos conocimos a principios de 2007 en la Facultad de Ciencias Sociales de la Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA) mientras cursábamos la carrera de Ciencias de la Comunicación. Entre trabajos en grupo, grabaciones en estudios de radio y faltazos a clase, nos empezamos a conocer y a los pocos meses empezamos a caminar por la vida juntos.

Los proyectos en común empezaron con la planificación del primer viaje -un típico viaje de vacaciones- a Perú en el 2009. El camino del Inca no fue fácil, pero lo hicimos con total naturalidad. Ahí nos dimos cuenta que eso de ser viajeros en pareja nos sentaba muy bien. De ahí en más cada año planificamos las vacaciones juntos. Argentina, Cuba, Colombia…

De este último viaje a Colombia volvimos con dos certezas: Una era que no queríamos volver y la otra que en no mucho tiempo nos íbamos a dedicar a viajar de un modo no vacacional. Fue en marzo de 2015 cuando empezamos este nuevo estilo de vida itinerante. Desde ese entonces recorrimos Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, Bolivia, Brasil, Guayana Francesa y Suriname. Y queremos seguir conociendo todos los países del continente americano y después Asia, África, Oceanía y Europa y tener la posibilidad de poder experimentar la vida en distintas partes del mundo.

“Vir y Fran de 365 Sábados Viajando”

En nuestro caso, como llevamos juntos desde que éramos bien jovencitos, el amor por los viajes surgió después que el amor entre nosotros. De hecho fue en nuestro primer viaje al continente africano cuando nos dimos cuenta de lo apasionante que era viajar, y no sólo eso sino viajar juntos, nos compenetrábamos mejor que en nuestras rutinas diarias, nos reíamos más, y éramos mucho más felices sintiendo la libertad del viaje que la rutina a nuestras espaldas.

En cada viaje fuimos afianzando más ese amor mutuo que crecía por los viajes y el amor que se fortalecía entre nosotros. Con nuestro gran viaje alrededor del mundo durante un año llegó la culminación de una relación tan fuerte que hasta fue capaz de soportar que estuviéramos las 24 horas de nuestros 365 sábados viajando sonriendo y sintiendo un amor profundo hacia esa vida nómada que iniciábamos juntos.

“Gabriela y Camilo de Plan B Viajero”

Plan B Viajero está conformado por Gabriela (argentina) y Camilo (mexicano). Nos conocimos en Buenos Aires en el año 2012. Ambos teníamos ganas de aventurarnos a recorrer el continente Latinoamericano y a los pocos meses de estar juntos decidimos que no sólo queríamos viajar, sino que además queríamos hacerlo juntos. Empezamos el viaje con la mochila al hombro y haciendo auto stop desde Argentina hasta México.

Esos años en la ruta nos cambiaron. Fuimos aprendiendo a ser más conscientes de nosotros y del medio que nos rodea. Fuimos modificando nuestro hábitos por completo. Tanto, que en México, decidimos construir nuestras propias bicicletas de bambú para seguir viajando de manera alternativa y sustentable.

Nos gusta viajar lento, nos quedamos en un lugar tanto como nos lo dicte el corazón. Buscamos tener un contacto más directo con la cultura de cada país y el medio ambiente. En nuestro blog fomentamos el estilo de vida que nos gusta. Promoviendo un turismo responsable tanto con las personas como con los demás animales. Para ganar dinero vamos trabajando como diseñadores gráficos y de páginas web.

“Claudia y Jairo de Sólo Ida Y Mochila Nómada”

Jairo y yo nos conocimos, como no podía ser de otra manera, viajando. Él llevaba 9 meses en Nueva Zelanda y yo un año recorriendo mundo. Amigos del mundo blogueril nos pusieron en contacto porque él iba a viajar con su madre a Filipinas y yo había obtenido la Working Holiday Visa de Nueva Zelanda, así que podríamos intercambiar información. El «intercambio» fue tan bueno que acabamos quedando en Filipinas y fue tan bien que decidimos continuar el viaje juntos. Hemos estado año y medio viajando por Asia y América ¡y tenemos planes de mucho más!

Mi amor por los viajes estoy segura de que nació gracias a mis padres. Con ellos viajé durante años y me transmitieron ese gusanillo viajero que ha hecho que esto sea mi vida ahora mismo. Amo todo lo que significa el viaje.

“Nancy y Demis de Vagaboom”

Demis en el pasado fue un banquero Suizo, con mucho dinero y amargado… y un día tomo la decisión de dejarlo todo y con una sola mochila viajar por donde el viento le lleve.

Mientras tanto Nancy estudiaba la universidad, pero al mismo tiempo ella tenía un vacío en su corazón, sentía la carencia de algo… pero no sabía que era ese algo.

Y fue entonces cuando sus caminos se cruzaron. Nancy le trató indiferentemente a Demis y eso hizo que él se enamorara perdidamente de ella… (que raro no?). Él se aferró al amor que sentía por ella, hasta que un día, al fin Nancy le aceptó y le amó también.

Cantando la canción de Calle 13 La vuelta al mundo se tomaron del corazón, recibieron la bendición de Dios, y comenzaron a pedalear. Y así ha sido hasta el día de hoy. Juntos los dos, atravesando países en su bicicleta, cada día enfrentando los retos, y reinando el amor.

“Emma y Ricky de Viajerosmundo”

Viajerosmundo lo formamos Emma y Ricky. En nuestro caso, la relación se fue forjando en los viajes que comenzamos a hacer juntos, al principio solo como amigos, pero poco a poco fuimos arrejuntándonos un poquito más.

Los primeros años nos veíamos esporádicamente en festivales, rutas por la naturaleza o viajes, era nuestro vínculo. Más allá de eso, en nuestra vida ordinaria no solíamos estar el uno con el otro. La primera experiencia fuerte fue un viaje por Galicia con la tienda de campaña, ese momento lo recordamos como el principio de algo más que una amistad. Ese viaje fue la semilla para plantearnos nuevas metas juntos

Desde entonces nuestras metas en la vida giran siempre entorno a viajar. Juntamos dinero y decidimos hacer un viaje de 15 meses por Asia. Fue toda una experiencia de aprendizaje, no solo para con el medio sino entre nosotros, como compañeros. Porque al fin y al cabo viajar es conocernos a nosotros mismos a través del mundo.

Viajar en pareja no es nada fácil, cada día tienes que tomar decisiones, afrontar dificultades y equivocarte para acabar tirados en una cuneta en un pueblo desolado perdido a la mano de dios. Y todas esas dificultades generan tensiones que si aprendes a solucionarlas, crece la relación, nutre el amor y aviva la llama. Afrontar esas dificultades juntos nos ha hecho conocernos más a nosotros mismos a través del otro y enamorarnos de nuestras perfectas imperfecciones.
